Transcultures has begun to develop several collaborations with artists and cultural operators from South Korea. The art scene in Seoul is particularly dynamic in the field of sound and digital arts.
On the recommendation of artist Rafael (read his interview), Transcultures is hosting sound artist Joyul in residence from October 1 to 13, 2024, concluding with a public meeting and concert at the Hautrage convent.
During her residency at Transcultures, Joyul will primarily work with her daxophone (an invention by German musician Hans Reichel – a wooden strip attached to a tripod with contact microphones, played with a bow, and a dax, a curved wooden piece with one side fretted) in a new, vibrant environment to explore a new sonic flow. For the concert in the convent’s chapel at the end of her residency, she will play with both the unique characteristics of the daxophone and the acoustics of this historic space.
Joyul (Kr)
A young musician and performance artist based in Seoul, already recognized internationally, who has just completed a European tour culminating in this residency in Saint-Ghislain. In her exploratory work, both demanding and subtle, she combines new instruments to produce electro-organic sounds, also utilizing her singing voice with a certain softness that contributes to atmospheres as dreamlike as they are mysterious.
In her performances, she explores the physicality of electronic music performance, becoming a body that bridges the human and animal realms, a generator of sounds that are at times ethereal and at other times earthy, enhanced by various sonic objects and effect pedals. She processes live elements such as spoken words, sensory inputs, field recordings gathered during her journey, and synthesized textures, weaving them together intricately.
