In this intense beginning of school year, Transcultures, newly installed on the site of Bois-du-Luc (La LouviĂšre), is actively preparing the 16th edition of the international festival of sound art City Sonic. It will open November 21st in Louvain-la-Neuve. Transcultures is a partner of a workshop focusing on the relation between sound and various contemporary hybrid practices in France (2nd year of exchange between the Art School of Tourcoing and Arts2, the Visual Arts School of Mons). Meanwhile, supported artists will travel from Brussels to Shenzhen. You can also discover new online archives (the Transonic event for the ‘Brussels Drone Day 2019’ and a lecture by Philippe Franck at the Bibliotheca Wittockiana-Brussels on sound and pre-digital poems) and two sonic videos (by Petermfriess and Pastoral). All supported by Transcultures, they once more appear as testimonies of these poetic hybridities -fiercely rebellious to the easy classifications- that motivate our commitment.
« A sound can not stand up, » writes John Cage in « 2 pages, 125 words on Music and Dance ». What we want to question here are the intrinsic links that sound has with duration, space and movement. What are the conditions of emergence of the sound fact? These conditions can be considered in a material, physiological, social, real or speculative way. What is producing a sound? What relationships does the sound have with its context and the listener?
âSoleil de Sucreâ (sugar sun) is the second collection of poetry by Christophe Bailleau (musician and visual artist of French origin based in Wallonia) after his first opus (+ online album) âFirebirdâ released early 2019 by Transcultures’Â Transonic label, the result of a writing residency between Paris and Charleroi, which had been particularly productive and given substance to several potential collections.
Technical or legal vocabulary, hip hop language, handbook of âJunior Woodchucksâ or Church missals, TV games and cooking shows, medicine instructions and circulation signs, every part is the best part ! Our odd world and its schizophrenic postmodernity are the raw material of these quirky post-haikus, sometimes illustrated with thumbnails borrowed from the web. No hierarchy of language in those sunny 100 pages that pierce the clouds of everyday life, but the sense of play and an arborescent imagination irrigated by surreal images and impressionistic snapshots. Christophe Bailleau probably has inconsolable baldness but his permanent curiosity is contagious.
Created in the framework of a residency hosted by the European Pepinieres of Creation, this third video work of âMars Abstractionâ series recently initiated by the German multimedia artist Petermfriess, defies the imagination in relation to a purely linear extension of human territories in space that is unlikely to happen as such. The visual material, taken from public sources, is reworked and recomposed to evoke the landscapes of Mars where, despite the date given by several probes, unknown mysteries and energies remain. As we do not know much on what can be heard on Mars, this video is accompanied by a sound creation that is inspired by both the imaginary and existing data.
The word âdroneâ (a synonym of âbumblebeeâ) can designate, in music, a long held or repeated sound with little harmonic variation. It is found in several contemporary minimalist approaches but also in some non-Western traditions. On the occasion of ‘Drone Day International’, events dedicated to the sound drone take place all over the world bringing together researchers of the sensation of sound freed from melody and rhythm, creating another sound space-time continuum.
At the initiative of Ariane Chesaux and Transcultures, the ‘Brussels Drone Day’, for the second time, gathered on May 25th, several artists from different backgrounds : Unda-Isa Belle and Ariane Chesaux interlacing of Tibetan bowls, gongs, bells and acoustic drone. Paradise Now – guitar/vocal/electronic soundscapes. Raymond Delepierre – organic soundscapes. Petermfriess – visual treatments, …). As an epilogue, Björn Jauss (modular synth) gave an « ELQ improv » dedicated to his grandmother. It was about sharing a singular energy and stimulating the discovery of the inner worlds of both sound artists and participants, each living this immersion into the sound.
This lecture « From sound poetry to intermedia writings » by Philippe Franck, in the frame work of the event « Digital writings & intermedia forms » organised at Bibliotheca Wittockiana (Brussels), was only in French.
Starting from a historical reminder of the experiences of various pioneers (Bernard Heidsieck, Henry Chopin, William S. BurroughsâŠ) who integrated the electronic & media technologies â since the 50âs technologies â to their poetic creative process to âtake the language out of the pageâ, Philippe Franck offers a panorama (illustrated by numerous examples) of current prospective approaches combining performative, installative, connected forms ⊠and digital technologies, by analyzing their contributions, questions and particularities in the cross-cultural fields. digital forms and new forms of intermediary writing(s).

Selected by curator Ma Yongfeng at the ‘Topography of the Stack’ exhibition organized by Alternative Culture Making in Shenzhen (China), ‘Mars Abstractions’ speculative series)’ challenges the imaginary of linear extension of human living territories into space and through technology. Modified copies of our life experience schemes on earth will be transferred to the nearest accessible planet. Images and sound reveal a planetary past to be transformed into a second earth, whereas. By stimulating the imaginary through a digital playful approach, it gives us an theoretical approach of future environments and habitats.

From September 18th onwards throughout the school year, the saxophonist / improvisational musician Maurice Charles JJ, whose work was often supported by Transcultures / City Sonic, organizes a musical improvisation workshop for all musicians adventurous or curious about sound experimentation. By gradually breaking away from classical game rules and the main function of the instrument, participants are invited to search and assemble sounds that will take them into a fully-fledged sound imaginary by « sharing the listening » and « creating in the moment the soundtrack of an imaginary film ».
The aim of the workshop is to create public landscapes of improvised soundscapes built in the present. Wishing to merge the different artistic disciplines, Maurice Charles JJ joins the German visual artist Ula Hasse and her workshop « The game of drawing ». Their two practices / artistic approaches will thus be in dialogue throughout the year of workshops.
Showflamme, Smart and Central present the second edition of ‘The Fire Symphony’ at the Bois-du-Luc site in partnership with the City of La LouviĂšre (Be) and the Museum of Mining and Sustainable Development.
For this exceptional traveling show, the company Showflamme has created a monumental fire scenography on the entire site. In the center of the route, spectators will be able to discover five scenes of fire artists, such as temples dedicated to the gods of antiquity related to Vulcan (Juno, Venus, Apollo, Mercury and Diana). Thematic design and musical programming of this new edition have been developed by the Belgian counter-tenor Dominique Corbiau.
