Sound art is a term which appeared relatively recently in the panorama of the contemporary arts. It has opened a vast field at the crossroads of contemporary and electronic music , visual arts , experimental poetry, radio art and now digital arts as well. What are the roots (in the avant-garde of the twentieth century) of the sound arts ? What are the main features of these forms and practices? How do artists play with sound (as Ist material) and space (as environment)? How does the site specific audio creation dialogue with the urban/public space? These are some issues that Philippe Franck (Transcultres, le manège.mons) will address, after a brief historical introduction, to provide critical lighting. He will also talk of his experience of director / founder of the international sound art festival City Sonic (since 2003 in Mons-Belgium and associated cities ) to illustrate his lecture with several video and audio examples .
