In the continuity of the previous editions of HyperUrban, this sixth conference on Information and Communication Technologies in Urban Environments, subtitled “Art and post-digital city, questions the territorial changes by digital technologies, always according to a multi or inter/disciplinary perspective. This time, it is about a better understanding the issues linked to creativity and territorial innovation through digital technology.

HyperUrban is aimed at all actors who think about the city, whether they be artists, researchers or professionals. In the program, Philippe Franck, art historian, director of Transcultures (Be) and European Pepinières of Creation (Fr) will speak on the subject of sound arts transforming the urban space.

Urban sound paths: (re)compose active listening territories

Through various works and events of sound art (including the international festival of sound arts City Sonic-Belgium) crossed with a selection of philosophical references, it is, after a brief historical reminder of what covers the notions of “sound art ”/ art (s) sound (s) and active listening, to analyze different modes of“ drift ”,“ route ”,“ stroll ”,“ geolocation ”… and other types of movement in and between urban spaces that the “listening walker” (Michel Chion) is invited to pace with his ears wide open.

Among the issues / questions discussed here:

  • How can these interventions / sound flows recompose / re-territorialize (Gilles Deleuze / Félix Guattari) the space invested?
  • How does abstract (Henri Lefebvre) or mental space become, through a constellation of re / singularized places, a metamorphosed/repoetized space and of artistic connection / revisitation?
  • How does sound creation redefine, in a given space / time, a territory in active listening?
  • How do digital technologies modify our “psychogeographies” (Guy Debord) and are the instruments of new interactive, immersive, participatory, augmented cartographies / constellations…?

How do these moving sound arts, in their aesthetic, formal and technological diversity, create “temporary zones of autonomy” (Hakim Bey) within the city?

Philippe Franck

Art historian, essayist and art critic, sound and intermedia producer/creator,  Philippe Franck (BE/FR) is the artistic director and founder of Transcultures (since 1996).
