2015 sera, à Mons, l’année de la Capitale européenne de la culture dont la grande Fête d’ouverture a lieu le 24 janvier (bienvenue à tous !) et embrasera toute la ville.
Transcultures démarre cette année après la précédente particulièrement chargée en événements en Belgique et à l’étranger, avec le soutien à la jeune création artistique numérique et sonore, avec des workshops émergences avec l’Ecole d’Arts Visuels Arts² et avec des publications sonores (sur notre label Transonic) et hybrides (avec Rhizome) qui en annoncent d’autres dans les mois prochains.
Contre toutes les formes d’intolérance, de perte de soi et donc de violences dont notre nouveau « Moyen-Age planétaire » souffre, nous continuerons à défendre ces transcultures qui allient altérité, engagement et créativité.
2015 will be, in Mons, the year of the European Capital of Culture opening with a great feast full of events taking place on January 24 (welcome!).
Transcultures will start this year (after the previous one particularly eventful in Belgium and abroad) supporting the young digital and sound artistic creation, with the ‘digital & sound emergences’ workshops with the Arts School of Mons Arts² as well as with the release of publications on its label Transonic.
Against all forms of intolerance, lost of oneself and thus violence which are part our new « global middle ages’, we will continue to defend these transcultures which combine otherness, commitment and creativity.
Dans le cadre du cycle de conférences et workshops Emergences numériques et sonores initié par Transcultures en partenariat avec l’Ecole des Arts Visuels de Mons Arts², Charo Calvo fera une présentation (à 9h30) suivie d’un atelier (14h) autour de son travail de composition électro-acoustique et de sound design.
Après avoir étudié la physique et avoir participé à la création en 1987, la compagnie de danse Ultima Vez dirigé par Wim Vandekeybus, Charo Calvo a suivi des études de composition électro-acoustiques au Conservatoire de Mons où elle enseigne la composition appliquée aux médias. Elle a réalisé de nombreuses créations sonores notamment pour Jan Fabre, les Ballets C de la B ou encore Ultima Vez.
Du 13 au 17 janvier, Gauthier Keyaerts propose un workshop d’initiation à l’importance du son dans le dialogue interdisciplinaire, introduisant aux notions narration sonore, osmose, contrepoint, spatialisation afin de ressentir le son, faire des prises de son, du montage son et son-image. Il se basera sur sa récente performance/installation AV interactive Fragments #43-44 ainsi que sur des interviews qu’il a réalisé de compositeurs-musiciens, des vidéos et extraits de film parfois manipulés.
Ces activités autour du son et de la performance sont complétées par un workshop d’initiation au logiciel libre de modélisation, d’animation et de rendu en 3D Bendler (salle arts numériques) du 19 au 22 janvier et le 19 janvier et une conférence d’Yves Bernard (directeur d’iMAL) Art+ Game (auditoire Pol Bury, 11:00).
In the context of the digital and audio conferences and workshops Emergences cycle initiated by Transcultures in partnership with the School of Visual Arts of Mons Arts², Charo Calvo will make a presentation in the morning followed by a workshop (14:00) about her work electroacoustic composition and sound design.
After studying physics and participating in the creation in 1987, of the now famous dance company Ultima Vez led by Wim Vandekeybus, Charo Calvo followed electro-acoustic composition studies at the Conservatory of Mons where she teaches composition applied to the media. She realized many sound creations for many dance companies including Jan Fabre, the Ballets C de la B or Ultima Vez.
From 13 to 17 January Gauthier Keyaerts offers an introductory workshop on the importance of sound in the interdisciplinary dialogue, introducing the concepts of sound narration, osmosis, counterpoint, spatialization to make the students feel and create the sound, make sound recordings, edit sound and image. It will be based on his performance / interactive AV Installation “Fragments#43-44” as well as interviews he made with composers and musicians, iconic videos and sometimes manipulated film clips.
These activities on sound & performance are complemented by an introductory workshop to the modeling, animation and rendering 3D free software Bendler from 19 to 22 January and 19 January and a conference by Yves Bernard (Director of iMAL-Brussels) on Art + Game (Bury room, 11:00).

Transcultures et Arts² proposent un workshop coordonné par les artistes sonores et numériques Stéphane Kozik et Julien Poidevin (sélectionnés pour de nombreuses manifestations internationaux dont récemment City Sonic et Park in progress) dans le cadre du projet Emergences sonores et numériques et du programme Espace(s) Son(s) Hainaut(s).
Les participants sont invités à créer une installation sonore interactive. Au programme de ce workshop ouvert en priorité aux étudiants d’écoles d’art de Wallonie et du Nord-Pas de Calais : apprentissage de techniques d’interactivité, initiation à des logiciels de traitement sonore, techniques d’exposition d’installations sonores…L’occasion de bénéficier de l’expérience d’artistes confirmés et d’appréhender les arts sonores par la pratique à la fois créative et technologique.

Cette huitième compilation City Sonic (la deuxième après celle de 2009-10-11 sur le label Transonic) présente une sélection de pièces sonores (installations, performances, concerts,…) présentés lors des trois dernières éditions du festival international des arts sonores à Mons. Parmi les artistes : Macheen (le Canadien Alexandre McSween ici dans son projet boîte à rythmes only), le compositeur belge Baudouin De Jaer (extrait de son projet sur l’artiste brut et visionnaire Adolphe Wölfli), Nicolas Jorio (guitariste de That Summer qui a contribué à une K7 audio aujourd’hui épuisée pour l’exposition de Julien Sirjacq L’oreille interne), Jean-Paul Dessy (Musiques Nouvelles) au violoncelle avec Jarek Frankowski pour de subtils traitements électroniques, le saxophoniste Maurice Charles JJ dans un doux paysage électro-organique, Julien Poidevin (permettant de découvrir un texte truculent du poète surréalisme hennuyer Achille Chavée par lui même), le Montois Stéphane Kozik et son Echo System (vibrations électro-aquatiques), le Lillois Nicolas Gaillardon dans un Boxe-to-Boxe noisy-rock – ces deux derniers étant les lauréats installations Espace(s) Son(s) Hainaut()s, Tomoko Sauvage et ses délicats bols de porcelaine remplis d’eau, un extrait de la bande-son de l’installation An-Art Key de Gauthier Keyaerts, la première apparition sur disque des duos Pastoral (Christophe Bailleau/électroniques + Philippe Franck/voix, synthé et guitare) et Ordinaire (Eric Therer/spoken word+Stephan Ink/basse,électro), le poète montréalais Jean-Marc Desgent dialoguant avec les sons organiques de Gauthier Keyaerts à la Sonic Garden Party, la harpiste contempo-free Hélène Breschand, Margarida Guia dans une pièce sonore réalisée lors de workshops avec des personnes handicapées, une bande-son noctambule et sensuelle de Paradise Now pour une installation AV de Régis Cotentin par Paradise Now, le duo lyrique expérimental Quasi una fantasia (le multi-musicien Pierre-Jean Vranken et la diva autrichienne Christina Van Peteghem), des découvertes prometteuses ayant participé au au projet Park in progress (Mathias Isouard sur les vibrations-résonances, :such : et ses réseaux fantomatiques de bandes magnétiques, Alain Lefebvre et sa Fréquence Vibration Son, le percussionniste Jason Van Gulick, Phil Maggi tous deux défendus par le label indépendant Idiosyncratics) ou encore un jingle réalisé pour la Sonic Radio pour l’ouverture, sans oublier Baudouin Oosterlinck, grand artiste de l’écoute belge qui clôt poétiquement le disque avec une présentation de sa pièce Quintette également présentée à City Sonic…le tout démontrant, à nouveau, la diversité créative du festival et des ses constellations sonores.
This eighth City Sonic compilation (the second after that of 2009-10-11 on the Transonic ‘alter label’) features a selection of sound pieces (installations, performances, concerts…) presented at the last three editions of the International Festival of sound arts in Mons, with Macheen (aka Montreal musician-composer Alexander McSween with its recent rythm box only project), the Belgian composer Baudouin De Jaer (from his project on the visionary artist Adolf Wölfli), Nicolas Jorio (guitarist of the Paris band That Summer which contributed to an audio K7 –sold out- for the exhibition of Julien Sirjacq, ‘The inner ear’), Jean-Paul Dessy (director of Musiques Nouvelles) on cello with Jarek Frankowski for subtle electronic processing, Belgian saxophonist Charles Maurice JJ with a mild electro dreamy landscape, Julien Poidevin (with a truculent text of Belgian surrealism poet Achilles Chavée by himself), Stéphane Kozik with an excerpt of its “Echo System” (electro-aquatic vibrations installation), Nicolas Gaillardon in a Boxing-to- Boxing noisy-rock – the latter two being the winners of the call for proposals by the transborder platform for innovative music, Espace(s) Son(s) Hainaut (s), Tomoko Sauvage playing her delicate water-filled porcelain bowls, an electro-organic excerpt from the organic soundtrack of the An-Art-Key installation by Keyaerts Gauthier, the first appearance on disk of the interesting Belgian duets Pastoral (Christophe Bailleau / electronics + Philippe Franck / vocals, synth and guitar) and Ordinaire (Eric Therer / spoken word + Stephan Ink / bass, electronics), Montreal poet Jean-Marc Desgent dialoguing with the sounds of Gauthier Keyaerts at the Sonic Garden Party, the French free harpist Hélène Breschand, the Portuguese audio artist and performer Margarida Guia with a collective piece created during workshops with-for disabled people, a nocturnal and sensual soundtrack by Paradise Now for a Régis Cotentin AV installation, the experimental-lyrical duet Quasi una fantasia (Brussels multi musician Pierre-Jean Vranken and the Austrian diva Christina Van Peteghem), promising discoveries that participated in the Park in progress project (Mathias Isouard on resonance vibration ,: suc:; and its haunting analogue tape loops, Alain Lefebvre in a “Frequency Vibration Sound’, powerful percussionist Jason Van Gulick, soundscapist Phil Maggi both defended by the independent label Idiosyncratics) or a jingle made for Radio Sonic without forgetting Baldwin Oosterlinck, Belgian pioneer of the art of the listening that closes poetically the disc with a presentation of his piece ‘Quintet’…all revealing the innovative diversity of the City Sonic creations.

Cette publication co-produite par Rhizome (Québec) et Transcultures est une trace du projet Transatlantiques (long courier) qui a associé des auteurs et musiciens belges et québecois pour créer ensemble sur scène, après des résidences à Québec et à Mons, des pieces audio-poétiques qui sont autant de mondes singuliers. Repris dans les échanges bilatéraux Québec-Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, Ces duos transatlantiques, aventureux, ont d’abord été présenté au Mois de la Poésie à Québec puis au Festival City Sonic à Mons en 2014 avant de donner lieu, en novembre dernier, à une tournée en Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles correspondant au lancement de cette publication au design sobre et soigné qui contient les textes (mis en contexte par Simon Dumas et Philippe Franck, directeurs artistiques respectivement de Rhizome et de Transcultures) des cinq créations initiales ainsi qu’un CD avec les enregistrements des ces pièces poético-sonores par Jean-Marc Desgent+Gauthier Keyaerts, Werner Moron+Erick D’Orion, Hervé Bouchard+Stephan Ink, Sebastian Dicenaire+Martin Tetreault, Simon Dumas+Paradise Now. Cette jolie livraison Rhizome a été réalisée en partenariat avec Transonic, ‘alter label’ initié par Transcultures, illustrant parfaitement le moto proposé par Simon Dumas pour ces échanges transatlantiques uniques : « la distance comme élan et la rencontre comme choc ».
This publication co-produced by Rhizome (Quebec) and Transcultures (Mons) is a trace of the Transatlantiques (long courier) project which associated Belgian and Quebecois writers and sound artists to create together on stage together – after residences in Quebec and in Mons – their audio-poetic creations which are all singular worlds. Part of the bilateral exchanges Québec/Federation Wallonia-Brussels, these nomadic transatlantic duets, were first presented at the Poetry Month in Quebec and the City Sonic Festival in Mons in 2014 before giving place last November to a tour of Wallonia-Brussels correspondent for the launch of this publication sober and elegant design which contains the texts – in French only (put in context by Simon and Philippe Franck Dumas, artistic directors respectively of Rhizome and Transcultures) of the five original creations as well as a CD featuring recordings of the pieces by Jean-Marc Desgent + Gauthier Keyaerts, Werner Moron + Erick D’Orion, Hervé Bouchard + Stephan Ink, Sebastian Dicenaire + Martin Tetreault, Simon Dumas + Paradise Now. This lovely object designed by Rhizome was produced in partnership with Transonic, ‘alter label’ initiated by Transcultures, illustrating the moto of the Transatlantiques project: « Distance as momentum and the meeting as a shock » (Simon Dumas).

La grande fête d’ouverture de Mons 2015 aura pour thème l’éblouissement. Vous serez transformés en boules à facettes vivantes en enfilant l’un des milliers de ponchos argentés qui vous seront distribués gratuitement. Ensuite perdez-vous ! Il n’y a pas d’horaire pour découvrir chaque rue, chaque parc, chaque bâtiment revisités par les artistes. Allumez les milliers de bougies qui embraseront la place du Parc. Ou apprenez à danser avec une centaine de robots fluo, place du Marché aux Herbes.
Tous les artistes seront de sortie, mais si vous rentrez dans les lieux de culture, attention ! Ce sera Woodstock au Théâtre Le Manège et des musiciens classiques allumés à l’Alhambra. Courez à la Maison Folie qui sera bien folle ce soir là. Venez rêvasser au Beffroi avec les elfes lumineux qui veillent sur le dragon endormi.
Offrez-vous un jacuzzi finlandais, puis revenez sur la Grand-Place et dansez jusqu’à pas d’heure.
Illumination is the theme of the Mons 2015 grand opening ceremony. You will be turned into a living mirror ball when you pull on one of the 18,000 silver ponchos that will be distributed for free.
Then just wander around! There is no schedule for exploring every street, park and building that the artists have transformed. Or learn to dance with a hundred fluorescent robots at Place du Marché aux Herbes. All the artists will be out and about, but if you wander into the cultural venues, look out! It’ll be Woodstock at the Théâtre du Manège and jazzed up classics at the Alhambra.
Or drift off into a reverie at the Belfry with the luminous elves who watch over the sleeping dragon. Treat yourself to a Finnish jacuzzi, then head back to the Grand’Place and dance into the small hours.
