As part of this post-production residency within Transcultures’ Arts/Science – Arts/Mental Health programme, Lithuanian artist Kotryna Žilinskaitė continues to develop the distinctive approach she initiated as part of her doctoral research into sound and body-based practices, working with neurodivergent people, particularly those on the autism spectrum and/or living with mental health conditions.
Sferos
At the intersection of performance, body-based research and vocal exploration, Sferos approaches the body as a living space in constant transformation. Movement, voice, breath, space and perception intertwine in an approach informed by theatre, dance, Tai Chi and various somatic practices.
Structured around the five elements (earth, water, fire, air and ether), the project explores different qualities of presence, movement and relationships with sound. Rather than a fixed method, Sferos develops as an open-ended process in which improvisation provides a means of exploring the connections between inner sensations, the environment and expression.
Kotryna Žilinskaitė (Lt)
Lithuanian interdisciplinary artist Kotryna Žilinskaitė works at the intersection of theatre, contemporary dance, video and sound. Trained in theatre at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, she has gradually shifted her practice towards exploring the relationships between body, voice, movement and space.
Holding a Master’s degree in Music Therapy from Vilnius University, she now combines artistic research with somatic and therapeutic approaches. Her projects take the form of performances, dance films, sound compositions, improvisations and workshops. She also develops international projects through the Užiateka cultural platform and regularly collaborates with Transcultures, particularly through residencies and research focusing on body-based and sound practices.
Arnaud Schockmel (Be)
Belgian musician, guitarist and collaborator on interdisciplinary projects, Arnaud Schockmel develops a practice centred on electric guitar, effects and live looping. In Sferos, he creates live sonic textures and soundscapes that interact with Kotryna Žilinskaitė’s voice and movement, contributing to the project’s improvisational and audiovisual dimensions.
His collaboration with Kotryna Žilinskaitė is part of a shared exploration of the relationships between music, body and image, developed through a series of performances and residencies in Belgium and Lithuania.
