February will be a time of work and public awareness with a new series of lectures ‘Augmented territories » at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of Mons, and also a lecture at the National Art School of Bourges, longtime partner of City Sonic. A new Belgian-Québec collaboration with Rhizome with a new interdisciplinary performance in the series of Oracles will be hosted in residence in Brussels and an evening « Tenir salon  » where authors and artists will perform and dialogue on the theme of death. So many opportunities to revive the widespread apathy (and its « entertainment »-placebo solution), which also contaminates our cultural institutions, with collaborative initiatives that display a fierce difference.

Since 2003, City Sonic, an international festival of sound arts initiated by Transcultures, deploys each year for several weeks, a sound itinerary made of site specific outdoor and indoor installations in the centre of the city of Mons. City Sonic also offers performances, workshops, meetings … in connection with an extensive network of Belgian and foreign partners.

This unique festival opens doors to different aesthetic of sound creation, in its contemporary diversity with addition of historical references and international works, a particular concern for the  » emergent sonic talents » (particularly through partnerships with Belgian and French art schools).

Artistic Director and founder of City Sonic Philippe Franck (also editor of the book ‘City Sonic, sound arts in the city’ published by Editions La Lettre Volée in 2015) will give a lecture, based on audio and video examples, talking about the key issues, of this unique adventure and will explain his transversal vision of sound art creation in the urban space today.

For a long time already, from Aristotle to Guy Debord, through Rousseau,Thoreau and Richard Long, artists and philosophers, walk through cities and countries to make a real way of being, thinking and creating. The years 70/80 saw the birth of the sound walks, summoning new readings and writings, which were sensitive to landscape, where aesthetics and ecology interact together regularly, according to the wanderings.

From this hisotry and and its specific forms of creations, Gilles Malatray (musician and specialist of the landscape, initator of the blog desartsonnants), highlights the close relationship between listening, art, environment, urban planning, architecture … The ‘listening walker’-artist poses a critical listening to the city, where the artistic gesture is for all those people, keen to preserve and develop a nice listening everyday.
