Newsletter September 2012 #2 – City Sonic 2012

This week will be madly sonic as Festival City Sonic proposes a series of live events in Mons and Brussels : Pixellations, a multimedia concert by ChampdAction and reFLEXible on September 12 at Theatre Le Manège (Mons), a solo concert by Jean-Paul Dessy at L’iselp (Brussels), a “Showcase émergences” concert on the 15th at Mediathèque-Mons, Sephardic and Gregorian chants at Collégiale Sainte Waudru-Mpns (in the framemwork of Festival Wallonie-Hainaut), Sonic Kids workshops at Maison Folie-Mons, Sonic Lab featuring 5 performances with invented instruments after the last visit of the sound itinerary in Mons. Transcultures will also take part to the European days of patrimoine in Oise (France) with 3 digital and sound arts exhibitions (15+16 Sept)and to the sixth edition of Park in progress in Nottingham (featuring 40 interdisciplinary Euopean young artists) on September 14th.

le manège.mons/Musiques Nouvelles present this multimedia concert featuring works by the late North American composerJames Tenney interpreted by ensemble ChampdAction and digital images by pionner Lilian Scwhartz (visuals by reFLEXible). A great AV performance premiered at City Sonic-Mons.

Concert Jean-Paul Dessy

In the framework of the exhibition The inner ear (a spectral recollection) by Julien Sirjacq (till September15 septembre, as part of City Sonic#10) , Transcultures/City Sonic and L’iselp propose a solo cello concert by composer Jean-Paul Dessy (director of Musiques Nouvelles) who will perform his recent compositions (taken from his solo album Prophètes released by Chant du Monde) and a special tribute to the late spectral music composer Gerard Grisey who seminal work is also part of this exhibition.

A new series launched by le manège.mons and la médiathèque to give some visibility to new talents of different musical genres. For its first edition at City Sonic-Mons, Showcase Emergences will gather the Polish Grazyna Bienkowski (keyboards) and the Belgian rock guitarist Teuk Henri (Sharko, Rawfrücht…)!

In the framework of du Festival de Wallonie-Hainaut, the Belgian ensemble La Roza Enflorese will play Sefaradic monodic songs after Stella Matutina & La Schola grégorienne du Sablon who will sing Gregorian songs as Saint Waudru Canons and Canonesses used to do in the 16th century.

A Festival Wallonie-Hainaut production , in partnership with le manège.mons et City Sonic.

Sound art workshops for the kids

3 City Sonic workshops to intiate the kids to the creativity with sounds by Julien Toussaint + Guy Constant – L’antre sonore ( (from 8 years old), Impala Utopia – Initiation to the crakle box (from 10 yeas old), Isa Belle – Sound massages (from 6 months old) with her magical Tibetan bowls.

As closing event of City Sonic in Mons (going on in Brussels and Huy), Transcultures, le manège.mons and Art Zoyd propose Sonic Lab (in the framework of the European project Espaces Sons Hainauts), 5 short concerts with invented instruments premiered at City Sonic by Hélène Breschand (electronic harp), Alejandro Viñao , Carl Faia + Nadia Ratsimandresy, Nicolas d’Alessandro (Handsketch), Fabrique Nomade (Francis Faber trio) playing a karlax trio composed by Michele Tadini.

Transcultures is invited again by the General Council of Oise (France) to curate 3 exhibitions in historical locations featuring Régis Cotentin video installations (Dreams featuring soundtracks by Scanner and Paradise Now) at Château de Pierrefonds, Bobvan Artificial Mythology (installations, sculptures and photos created for the digital arts Biennale Les Transnumériques inBrussels) at Donjon de Vez and a selection of City Sonic audio pieces at Musée de l’Archerie (Crépy).

Park in progress #06

For the 6th edition of Park in progress, UK Young Artists and the European pépinières for young artists invite 40 young artists and professionals of the creative world to work together on the park of the Nottingham castle In the frmae of International World Event Young Festival. In this exceptional framework they will imagine a nighttime strolling promenade marked out with new site specific artistic projects.
